"I'll give you my contact details as they appear on five different sites. Compare them character by character and tell me all the differences, however small, including abbreviations, commas, phone format, and presence or absence of the postal code. Then give me a recommended canonical version."
Choose a format, and from there use it everywhere.
Error 3: not marking the business with structured data
Structured data is a block of code that tells Google, unequivocally, what type of business you are, where you are, when you open, and what area you serve. Without them, the search engine has to guess by reading your text.
For a local business, the type you need is LocalBusiness or one of its more specific subtypes —Dentist, Plumber, Restaurant, AccountingService and many others—. The more specific, the better.
The fields that truly matter are the name, the full address with postal code, the phone number, opening hours, the URL, and geographical coordinates. If you provide home service instead of receiving at a physical location, there is a specific field to declare your service area.
AI generates this block well and quickly if you give it the data. But always validate the result in Google's rich results test tool before approving it: a syntax error causes it to be ignored entirely and you won't know. If the JSON becomes unreadable from so much nesting, you can order it with our JSON formatter and validator before pasting it.
In WordPress you can insert it with Yoast, with Rank Math or directly with a snippet manager. We have a guide on WPCode for managing snippets which works well for this and avoids touching the topic.
Error 4: writing for the keyword instead of for the search
"Plumber Madrid" is a keyword. What people really write is "urgent plumber Sunday Madrid", "how much does it cost to change a water heater in Madrid" or "plumber who fixes a leak without breaking tiles".
Those long searches have much less competition and much more purchase intent. And those are the ones a small business can win.
To find them, you don't need a paid tool. You have three free and better sources:
- Your own phone. Write down for two weeks what customers literally ask you when they call. Those are the searches.
- Google's autocomplete. Write your service and your city and see what it suggests.
- The "Other questions from users" block of the search results.
With that list in hand, AI serves to group it by intent and detect which ones are answered on the same page and which ones need their own. That's precisely the opposite of generating a hundred pages: it's deciding how many are truly needed, which are usually quite a few less.
A realistic work plan
If you start from scratch, this order yields more:
- Week 1. Complete Google Business Profile listing and consistency of contact data everywhere.
- Week 2. Structured local business data on the web, validated.
- Week 3. Collect real searches through the three channels above and group them.
- Weeks 4 to 8. One page or article per week responding to search groups with more intent.
- Continuous. Ask satisfied customers for reviews and respond to all of them, even the bad ones.
None of this is spectacular. Local SEO works by accumulation of well-done things, not by a trick.
Speed matters more than you think here
A large part of local searches are done from mobile, often with poor coverage and in a hurry: someone looking for a locksmith at eleven at night won't wait five seconds for your website to load. They'll go to the next one.
If your WordPress is slow, that is probably your biggest local SEO problem, ahead of any text optimization. Our WordPress speed optimization guide covers what is most noticeable, and the comparison of best cache plugins solves half the matter in an afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rank in a city where I don't have a physical location?
In normal results, yes, if you have content that truly serves that area. In the map block, it's much more difficult without a physical presence, and faking an address is a quick way to get your listing suspended. If you travel to that area, the correct thing is to declare it as a service area instead of inventing an address.
How long does it take to notice?
In local SEO, movements are seen sooner than in general SEO, because you compete against fewer websites and many are less well-worked. With a proper Google listing, it can be noticed in weeks. The content part of the website goes slower: count on three to six months of constant work.
Can AI write responses to reviews?
It can help you write them, especially when the review is harsh and you want to respond without writing in the heat of the moment. But always read and adjust them: a generic and evidently automatic response to a specific complaint does more harm than not responding. And never use AI to write fake reviews: besides being prohibited by Google, in Spain it can constitute misleading advertising.
Do I need a specific local SEO plugin?
It's not essential. With a general SEO plugin and well-placed structured data, you have the essentials covered. Specific plugins pay off if you manage several locations, because handling location pages manually becomes cumbersome. We compare the general options in best SEO plugins for WordPress.
To close
Local SEO rewards the concrete: a consistent address everywhere, correct structured data, pages that talk about real jobs in real places, and a website that loads fast on a mobile with poor coverage.
AI accelerates the tedious part —comparing data, generating markup, grouping searches, drafting drafts— but the starting material has to come from your business. What makes you beat the eight competitors in your city is precisely what they cannot copy, and no model is going to invent that for you.
