Gutenberg block editor guide

The Gutenberg block editor is, since WordPress 5.0, the native way to create content on the platform: each paragraph, image, heading, or button is an independent piece (a block) that you can move, configure, and combine to lay out complete pages without writing code or installing external builders. Many users were disoriented by the change from the classic editor back then, but the reality of 2026 is that Gutenberg has matured into a serious layout tool: columns, pre-designed patterns, reusable blocks, and fine control over typography, color, and spacing that makes many plugins unnecessary. In this guide, you will learn to handle the block editor with ease: the interface and its shortcuts, the essential blocks and how to configure them, layout with columns and groups, synchronized patterns and blocks that multiply your productivity, and the tricks used by those who publish daily to work faster than with any classic editor.

The Gutenberg block editor interface: where everything is

When creating a new post or page, you will find three main areas:

  • The central canvas, where you write and see the content as it will appear (or very similar, depending on your theme).
  • The top bar, with the block inserter (the + button), undo/redo, the list view (essential in complex compositions), and on the right the save, preview, and publish buttons.
  • The settings sidebar, which toggles between document settings (categories, featured image, excerpt, URL) and selected block settings (color, typography, spacing). It is shown or hidden with the gear icon.

Also, when selecting any block, a floating toolbar with its quick actions: change type, align, move up or down, and the three-dot menu with options like duplicate, copy, or convert to pattern.

The fastest way to work is not with the mouse, but with the keyboard. Type / at the beginning of an empty line followed by the block name (/imagen, /tabla, /columnas) and you will insert it without touching the inserter. Other shortcuts that deserve muscle memory:

  • Ctrl + Shift + D: duplicate the selected block.
  • Ctrl + Alt + T: insert a block before the current one.
  • Ctrl + Shift + Alt + M: toggle between visual editor and code editor.
  • ## + space: converts the line into an H2 heading (### for H3, and so on).

The essential blocks and how to get the most out of them

Gutenberg brings dozens of blocks, but 90% of daily work is done with just a few. Knowing their options in depth makes all the difference:

Paragraph and Heading

The two pillars. In the sidebar, you can adjust font size, text and background color, and drop cap. With headings, respect the SEO hierarchy: a single H1 (the post title), H2 for sections, and H3 for subsections. If you work on positioning, an SEO plugin will alert you to these details; you have our guide for install and configure Yoast SEO in WordPress if you haven't already.

Image and Gallery

The Image block allows alignment (including full width and wide width if the theme supports it), link, alternative text, and corner rounding. Always upload optimized images: the weight of photos is the number one cause of slow websites, and converting them beforehand to a modern format with an image to WebP converter reduces the size by up to 80% without visible loss.

List, Quote, and Table

Lists support nesting and numbered or ordered style; tables allow header, footer, and fixed-width cells. For comparative content, a well-used table improves readability and is rewarded in Google's rich results.

Buttons, Separator, and Spacer

The Buttons block creates calls to action with configurable colors, borders, and radii without CSS. The Spacer (height adjustable in pixels) solves those vertical gaps that previously required tricks.

Media & Text, and Custom HTML Block

Media & Text places image and text in two responsive columns with one click. And when you need to embed something exotic, the Custom HTML block accepts any code: it's the escape valve for edge cases.

Layout with columns, groups, and rows

This is where the Gutenberg block editor goes from text editor to design tool:

Columns

The Columns block divides the width into 2 to 6 columns with predefined proportions (50/50, 30/70...) or custom percentages. Inside each column, you can insert any block, including other columns. On mobile, they automatically stack vertically.

Group

El bloque Grupo envuelve varios bloques en un contenedor con fondo, borde, padding y margen propios: es la forma de crear “cajas” destacadas (un aviso, una oferta, un resumen) sin plugins. Selecciona varios bloques y usa Group from the toolbar.

Row and Stack

Group variants with horizontal (Row) or vertical (Stack) layout based on flexbox: perfect for aligning an icon next to text or a series of logos.

A workflow tip: in nested compositions (groups within columns within groups) selecting the correct block with the mouse is frustrating. Open the list view from the top bar: you will see the complete block tree and can select and drag any block with total precision.

Patterns and synced blocks: stop repeating yourself

The two features that bring the most productivity to frequent publishers:

Patterns

A pattern is a pre-designed composition of blocks (a header with a call to action, a services grid, a FAQ section) that you insert and then customize. WordPress includes an official library, and many themes add their own. You can also create your own: select the blocks, three-dot menu, Create pattern. If a design works well for you once, convert it into a pattern and don't lay it out from scratch again.

Synced blocks

When creating a pattern, you can mark it as synced: then all its copies are the same entity, and editing it in one place updates it on all pages where it appears. It's the perfect tool for repeated elements that change over time: an author box, a legal notice, a campaign call to action. The day your offer changes, you edit it once and the entire website updates.

Function What it is When to use it
Pattern (unsynced) Block template that is copied Designs you reuse but customize for each use
Synced pattern Single block shared between pages Identical elements on many pages that need to be updated simultaneously
Group with styles Container with custom design One-off boxes you won't repeat

Daily productivity tricks

  1. Write first, design later. Write all content in paragraphs and headings, and only at the end add images, columns, and boxes. Mixing writing and design doubles the time.
  2. Paste from Word or Google Docs without fear. Gutenberg cleans the formatting and automatically converts headings, lists, and bold text into correct blocks.
  3. Drag images directly from a folder on your computer to the canvas: they upload and insert themselves.
  4. Convert blocks between types. A paragraph can be converted into a quote, heading, or list from its toolbar, without rewriting anything.
  5. Usa “Copiar estilos” y “Pegar estilos” (block's three-dot menu) to replicate color, typography, and spacing between blocks.
  6. Control content length. For SEO articles, it's advisable to monitor the total length; a quick check with the word and character counter tells you instantly if you reach the goal.
  7. Locks critical blocks. From the block menu, Lock prevents it from being moved or deleted by accident: useful on websites edited by multiple people.

Gutenberg versus visual builders

The inevitable question: is a builder like Elementor or Divi still necessary? It depends on the project. Gutenberg wins in loading speed (generates clean HTML, without extra layers of CSS and JavaScript), in long-term stability (it's part of the core, not a plugin that can be abandoned), and in editing speed for editorial content. Builders still offer more pixel-perfect design control, advanced visual effects, and more spectacular commercial templates.

As a general criterion: for blogs, media, documentation, and corporate websites with a lot of content, Gutenberg is today the most sensible option; for highly designed landing pages or clients who demand complex visual effects, a builder can be justified. Also keep in mind that Gutenberg's visual result depends heavily on the active theme: a modern theme prepared for blocks multiplies its possibilities, and in our guide on how to choose the perfect theme for your WordPress website we explain what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go back to the classic WordPress editor?

Yes, the official Classic Editor plugin is still available and maintained. But except for very specific cases (legacy workflows, incompatible plugins), today it's better to invest that effort in learning the block editor: all present and future WordPress development revolves around it.

Is the Gutenberg block editor bad for SEO?

On the contrary. It generates semantic and lightweight HTML, favors hierarchical headings, and integrates with all SEO plugins. A page laid out with native blocks usually loads faster than its equivalent made with a visual builder, and speed is a ranking factor.

What happens to my old posts from the classic editor?

Se muestran dentro de un “bloque clásico” que conserva su contenido intacto. Puedes dejarlas así indefinidamente o convertirlas a bloques con la opción Convert to blocks, which automatically separates paragraphs, headings, and images. Review the result after converting, especially if they used shortcodes or custom HTML.

Do I need additional block plugins?

To start, no: native blocks cover most needs. If you miss specific blocks (accordions, pricing tables, testimonials), suites like Spectra or Stackable add them. Install only one of these suites, not several: each loads its own resources and duplicating them penalizes performance.

Conclusion

The Gutenberg block editor has come a long way since its debut: what started as a controversial editor is today a complete, fast, and perfectly integrated layout tool in WordPress. The actual learning curve is short: interface, half a dozen essential blocks, columns and groups for layout, and patterns to avoid repeating work. With these fundamentals and keyboard shortcuts, publishing well-designed content becomes a matter of minutes. Our practical advice: in your next post, try to solve with native blocks what you previously did with shortcodes or layout plugins. Most likely, you'll discover that the editor WordPress comes with by default was the tool you've been looking for.
