Creating a blog with WordPress remains, in 2026, the most solid way to build your own online presence: you write in a space that belongs to you, you rank on Google in the medium term, and if the project grows, you can monetize it without asking permission from any platform. The technical part, which is what scares most people at first, can be resolved in an afternoon; what really makes a difference is doing it in the correct order and without skipping the foundations. In this guide, we cover the complete and real process: choosing the niche and name, contracting domain and hosting, installing WordPress, configuring the settings almost everyone forgets, choosing a theme, installing just the right plugins, writing the first posts with SEO criteria, and leaving the blog ready to grow. No step requires programming knowledge. By the end, you will have a published blog and a clear roadmap for the first few months.

Step 1: define the niche and name before touching anything technical

El error más caro no es técnico: es empezar un blog “de todo un poco”. Los blogs que crecen tratan un tema concreto para un público concreto, porque Google premia la especialización y los lectores vuelven cuando saben qué esperar.

Before buying anything, answer three questions in writing:

  • What can I write 50 articles about? If you can't come up with 50 possible titles in a brainstorming session, the niche is too narrow or you're not interested enough.
  • Who is going to read it? Writing about cooking for students is not the same as for gluten-intolerant people. The audience defines the tone and keywords.
  • Is there demand? Search on Google for the topics you have in mind. If there are blogs and videos about it, there's interest; competition is a sign of a market, not a problem.

With the niche clear, choose the name. Short, easy to spell when dictated, without hyphens or numbers, and if possible with longevity (avoid tying yourself to a fleeting trend). Check immediately that the .com or .es domain is available.

Step 2: contract domain and hosting

A self-hosted WordPress blog needs two things: a domain (the address, about 10-20 € per year) and hosting (the server where the website lives, between 50 and 120 € per year on a decent shared plan). Many providers give away the domain for the first year when contracting hosting.

For a blog that's starting, you don't need anything exotic, but you do need some minimums: one-click WordPress installer, free SSL certificate (the browser padlock, essential), daily automatic backups, updated PHP, and support in your language. If you have doubts between types of hosting, in this guide on what hosting you need for WordPress we explain exactly what to look for depending on the project size.

A veteran's tip: don't contract three years at once for the discount. Start with one year; if the provider doesn't deliver, changing hosting is possible but it's a job you'd rather not do.

Step 3: install WordPress

Today almost all hostings install WordPress from their panel in less than five minutes: you choose a domain, define the administrator's username and password, and click install. Two precautions in that form:

  1. No uses “admin” como nombre de usuario. It's the first one automated attacks try.
  2. Use a long and unique password. If you need one, generate a strong one with our secure password generator free.

If you prefer to understand the process in depth or install manually (download the software from es.wordpress.org, create the database, upload files), you have the complete procedure in our definitive guide to installing WordPress, and also a review of the common errors when installing WordPress to avoid them before committing them.

Upon completion, log in to tudominio.com/wp-admin with your credentials. That panel will be your home from now on.

Step 4: the 6 settings you must touch before writing

A fresh installation needs a five-minute review that many people skip and later regret:

  1. Permalinks: en Ajustes → Enlaces permanentes, marca “Nombre de la entrada”. Así tus URLs serán tudominio.com/mi-articulo instead of tudominio.com/?p=123. Do it before publishing anything; changing it later requires redirection.
  2. Site title and description: in Settings → General. They appear in Google and in the browser tab.
  3. Time zone and language: in the same panel, so that scheduled posts go live when they should.
  4. Comments: in Settings → Comments, enable pre-moderation. You'll save yourself from published spam.
  5. Delete sample content: la entrada “¡Hola, mundo!”, la página de muestra y los plugins preinstalados que no vayas a usar.
  6. Search engine visibility: in Settings → Reading, check that the box that discourages search engines is NOT checked. It's a classic: blogs invisible for months because of that box.

Step 5: choose the theme (design) without losing a week

The theme controls the blog's appearance. In Appearance → Themes, you can install thousands of free options from the official repository. To start, look for a theme that meets four conditions: that it is lightweight (fast loading), that it looks good on mobile, that it is updated frequently, and that it has good ratings. Themes like GeneratePress, Astra, Blocksy, or Kadence are safe bets for blogs; WordPress's default themes (Twenty Twenty-Five and earlier) are also a decent starting point.

Two tips to avoid falling into the usual trap:

  • Don't look for the perfect theme before writing. With 0 articles, any design doesn't matter: content is what brings readers. Choose a decent one and revisit the design in three months.
  • Customize only the basics: logo, colors, menu, and homepage. The rest can wait. If you want finer criteria for deciding, here we explain how to choose the perfect theme for your WordPress website.

Step 6: install only the essential plugins

Plugins add features, but each one adds weight and maintenance. For a new blog, five or six are enough:

Function Recommended options Purpose
Search Engine Optimization Yoast SEO or Rank Math Titles, descriptions, sitemap
Backups UpdraftPlus Restore the blog if something breaks
Security Wordfence Firewall and malware scanning
Cache / speed LiteSpeed Cache or WP Rocket So the blog loads fast
Contact form WPForms Lite or Fluent Forms So readers can write to you
Antispam Antispam Bee Stop comment spam

The SEO plugin deserves ten minutes of initial configuration: an assistant will guide you to define if the site is personal or corporate, generate the sitemap, and connect with Google. We have a specific guide for install and configure Yoast SEO in WordPress step by step.

Step 7: create the basic pages and write your first posts

Before the first post, create four static pages that every serious blog needs: About me (who writes and why they should read you), Contact (with the form), Privacy policy y Legal notice (mandatory in Spain if you collect any data, including the contact form).

How to write a post that works

In Posts → Add New, the block editor opens: you write paragraphs, add titles, images, and lists as stacked blocks. The mechanics are learned in ten minutes. The important thing is the method:

  1. Start from a real search. Cada entrada debe responder a algo que tu público busca en Google (“cómo germinar aguacate”, “mejores mochilas de senderismo”). Escribe el artículo que a ti te habría gustado encontrar.
  2. Structure with subtitles (H2 and H3): nobody reads a wall of text. Lists and bold text help scanning.
  3. Sufficient length: as a reference, between 800 and 2,000 words depending on the topic. More than the number, it's important to cover the question completely; you can control the length with our word and character counter.
  4. Fill in the basic SEO: attractive title with the keyword, description that invites clicks, and a featured image.
  5. Link between your articles: each new post should link to two or three related older ones. It's one of the most effective things you can do for your SEO and it costs nothing.

Compress images before uploading them: a 4 MB mobile photo can ruin page speed. Convert them to WebP with our image to WebP converter free and upload them already optimized.

Step 8: connect the blog with Google and measure from day one

Publishing without measuring is walking blind. On launch day, dedicate half an hour to this:

  • Google Search Console: register your domain and send the sitemap generated by your SEO plugin (usually in tudominio.com/sitemap_index.xml). This way Google will index your posts sooner and you'll be able to see what searches people use to find you.
  • Google Analytics 4: to know how many visits you have, where they come from, and what they read. The complete process is in our guide for connect Google Analytics 4 to WordPress.

Don't obsess over numbers in the first few weeks: a new blog takes between 3 and 6 months to start receiving stable organic traffic. It's normal and happens to everyone.

Step 9: publishing and maintenance routine

A blog is a marathon. This minimum routine sustains the project:

  • Publish consistently: better one good article every week for a year than ten in the first month and then silence. Regularity weighs more than volume.
  • Update WordPress, theme, and plugins once a week or every two weeks. Updates patch security holes.
  • Verify the backup once a month: check that UpdraftPlus is saving files where it should (ideally in Drive, Dropbox, or another external destination).
  • Check Search Console monthly: what searches bring you clicks and what articles are almost ranking (positions 8-20). Updating and expanding these articles is the fastest way to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to create a blog with WordPress?

Between €60 and €140 per year: the domain (€10-20) plus shared hosting (€50-120). The WordPress software, the theme, and all the plugins mentioned in this guide have free versions sufficient to start. You can invest later in a premium theme or SEO tools, but it's not necessary on the first day.

How long does it take to create a blog with WordPress?

The technical part (domain, hosting, installation, settings, theme, and plugins) is done in an afternoon, between 3 and 5 hours if it's your first time. What requires time is the content: set aside a few hours weekly to write regularly, because an empty blog doesn't rank.

Can I create a blog for free with WordPress?

Yes, on WordPress.com with a subdomain (myblog.wordpress.com), but with third-party advertising, without plugins, and with very limited growth potential. For a serious project, the €60-140 annually for self-hosting is one of the best possible investments: everything described in this guide can be done without restrictions.

When will I start receiving visits?

With constant publication and articles that respond to real searches, most new blogs notice growing organic traffic between the third and sixth month. You can accelerate the arrival of the first readers by sharing on social media and communities in your niche, but the medium-term engine is Google.

Conclusion

Creating a blog with WordPress is a perfectly manageable process without technical knowledge: niche and name, domain and hosting, installation, six basic settings, a light theme, five plugins, legal pages, and the first posts oriented to real searches. Technology is mastered in an afternoon; success is decided by consistency and the usefulness of what you write. Start simple, publish every week, measure with Search Console, and improve on the fly: within six months you will have something that the vast majority never achieve, a living blog, yours, and with readers who arrive on their own from Google.
